Gibi is an ASMR artist. She started her YouTube channel two years ago, and now has over 1.5 million subscribers. Like other creators in her field, her videos are defined by a practice of whispering or speaking softly into binaural microphones and a combination of tapping and scratching household objects.
The acronym ASMR stands for “Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response,” which is the tingly sensation many people who swear by these videos get while they’re watching. But besides that unique sensory experience, viewers use the soothing videos to relax, combat insomnia, or just for entertainment.
ASMR is Gibi’s full-time job, but lately, her income has been jeopardized by a growing perception that the genre borderlines on sexual fetish.
