Just because the COVID-19 pandemic has strangled every facet of American life doesn’t mean we can’t laugh at it. TikTok users are coming up with humor as dark as the times. They’re looking at the mosquitos wandering outside, because all of their food has gone indoors. And one user pointed out that we’re one cough away from meeting Aaliyah in the afterlife.
While a health crisis with this severity is new, the use of dark humor as a coping mechanism. Laughing, even when the world falls apart, releases dopamine, the body chemical that makes you feel pleasure. The benign-violation theory — which explains that laughing at stuff that could kill us makes those threats easier to handle — also makes sense of this juxtaposition between chuckles and fear.
